Ansel Adams masters in landscape photography, he brings out texture in his objects by making the picture black and white. My opinion on his work is he takes nice pictures and has good angles to make the picture look better, i feel this was because a normal picture with no angles or not as much effort wouldn't look as good as his photos.
I think this photo became times magazines most popular photo because it shows one the few last moments of one of the victims on 911 and because people feel like they can relate to this picture and its one of the few pictures showing somebody that died moments after on 911.
He brought out texture through side lighting. There was no color photography so every HAD to shoot in B&W.
